A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum

Kaca membiaskan cahaya matahari yang kering. Air bercucuran dari mata. Ini bukan soal perasaan sentimentil. Saya lagi sakit. Pepohonan meranggas. Di kejauhan, papan nama A&W berdiri tegak seperti dalam film-film independen Amerika tentang perjalanan.

Saya lupa membawa buku bacaan. You can love a city, either by its strangeness and foreign-ness or by its familiarity.

The people are nice and they are fashionable. Terlalu banyak barang.

Jangan bilang, saya tidak pernah ke sana. But it was like one or two years ago and nothing special to remember about that. Ketemu Akbar. Lalu Kuntz, Tumpie dan Alexis. Kok bisa? Ternyata rombongan terakhir ini lagi ngurusin LA Lights Indiefest. Sial, ini terlalu familiar. And I hate BDG in a way that it's tooo cold. I got more fever.

And I hate it because it's hot, dusty and the stuffs in all places are the same or similar (347 is a little bit different, if you need a recommendation). Isinya anak SMA. Malang.

I feel a little bit melancholy. Bukan karena a phrase like...after all those years. Tapi lebih, Oh, well, now you know what I mean about place. Atmo mungkin tertawa-tawa membaca ini. Saya bilang, saya ingin belajar bahasa Sunda. Sama Rani aja deh. Saya tiba-tiba ingin mendengarkan I ain't nobody's bitch. Atmo terlalu banyak travelling tapi dia tahu that (or those) bitchs! Je le manque, c'est salope! Dia di JKT. Oh, seperti drama.

Semalam, saya tidur jam 2 dini hari (lagi).

for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Comedy
Director: Michel Gondry
Cast: Jack Black, Danny Glover, Melonie Diaz, Mos Def
Running Time: 100 Min

Film Be Kind Rewind tidak meneruskan tradisi romantisme Gondry, tapi masih menyisakan mainan-mainan aneh.

Mereka membuat film (remake) Ghostbusters, Rush Hour 2, dokumenter Muhammad Ali, When We Were Kings, Driving Miss Daisy, Lion King, bahkan 2001: Space Oddyssey.

Gondry berhasil membuat mitos baru tentang sejarah jazz Amerika, aku pikir.

Yah, secara keseluruhan, film ini tidak buruk. Punchlines-nya bikin nyinyir. Mainan-mainannya bisa bikin ketawa dan cukup mengagumkan. Well, selamat nonton!

Watching movies with children could be very entertaining. It's my first experience. I shared a cinema theatre with 6-12 years old kids and their parents and obviously I'm the only young person attending such festivity.

Of course, you can easily browse the synopsis etc but the film is bad. There are too many advertisements/product placements (even the parent realised and complained about it). The script is very weak. Directing department could not make up the bad script. The kids are Ok, but it does not overwhelm me. The songs are good. In fact, many fellow audiences sing a long with the them. The antagonists have a very strong Javanese accent and they are very funny. They can sing. Ohhh, gosh, how I love them. Momo a.k.a Minus losses his line. He is talented but he is in the wrong way to develop his career.

When I watched the film, the cinema was almost full and I know everybody wants more. Oh, I just wish that Indonesia film producer can make more kids film and I will make kids out of this hahaha.

1. Punk
Di kampus, ada cowok berwajah innocent, berkulit putih, bibir merah, kepala gundul, pakai boot hitam, jumper/hoodie hitam, dan jeans biru skinny. Bergentayangan sejak kampus 24jam. Feel a little bit surprised. I thought that art-school punk is a lumpen proletariat (well, most of them are!)

2. Topshop sedang diskon sampai tanggal 3 Agustus.
Aku berpikir Topshop adalah what's 'it' in the town and every 'girl about a town' rushes hurrily to their outlet.

3. Pelacuran is the way we are.
Pemilu 2009 menjelang. Hidup adalah perbuatan. Well, yeah, dan seorang calon presiden bilang ke saya dia perlu membuat video. Money talks!

4. Facebook
d. radikal yang sedih (communism is dead my life felt empty)

5.Foto
Oh, baru tau, Anais Nin seharusnya menjadi fashion icon.

6. Percintaan Milenium
Judul filmnya THX 1138, There's only One Sun, Rebels of the Neon God dan 2001: A Space Oddyssey.

I keep buying CDs, despite mp3 is available everywhere. I admit that I'm little bit conventional. But buying CDs gives me pleasures. I love the sound quality and most of all, I love the artwork. Some of my records were bought because I love the sleeves or the cover. I know I buy the good music, not the package. But well, package does matter.

Yesterday, while having lunch in Thamrin with a boss, I bought a record from the motion picture 'Into the Wild'. I watched the film three times. Don't ask me why. I just love it. Fascinated by its film, I instantly decided to buy the record soon I seen it in MusicPlus (one of my favorite store) in Sarinah.

It seems that Eddie Vedder is a perfect mate for Sean Peann's work. They work together since Dead Man Walking and I am Sam (a weepie huhuhu). Into the Wild is Sean Penn's film, telling about a disillusioned twenty-something WASP American named Christopher McCandless who dropped out of society, hitched cross-country and perished in the Alaskan wilderness. After taking a break from Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder tells the young man's story on the soundtrack to Sean Penn's Into the Wild, tossing his weighty baritone onto earthy, folky tracks that temper the romance of freedom with an eerie atmosphere.

Vedder contributes 11 tracks that present the sublime beauty of American landscape. Contemplation is the key word. Digging the heritage of folk and American anthem, Vedder also presents some balladic numbers as on the banjo-inflected No Ceiling,Rise(my best), Long Nights,Society, and The End of the Road.Hard Sun is stand-out while Guaranteed is simply a great tune.

Music for the Motion Picture Into the Wild was awarded in last Grammy Award. It, for sure, should give you a clue.

Running time: 33.04 minutes (11 tracks)
Price: 95,000 idr (hemmm..quite pricey, but it's imported, so they say)

Dibandingkan film-film dia setelahnya seperti Vive L'Amour (1994), the River (1997), the Hole (1998), Good Bye Dragon Inn, Missing, What Time Is It There?

Hoho, saya serius sekali rupanya. Jadi merasa najis sendiri hehehe.

You might be wondering why I keep watching trash, sitting in the darkness while many teenagers screaming and yelling out loud, ignoring some customs of civilization. I believe I was born in the darkness, trying hopelessly to find a gem in the vibrant scene of Indonesian cinema. And I keep in my mind that there is two type of directors working in Indonesia: those who have money and those who have a good and rich friend.

If you don’t have a lot of bucks in your wallet, than you can work to the production house who can fund your project or either you have to work for them. Rarely, they fund your project and mostly, they will hire you to direct their script with some absolute command: you have to make a horror movie.

Awi Suryadi is one good example. His directorial debut, Claudia/Jasmine, is proved to be commercial flop. This year, he turned to direct a horror movie, produced by prolific Maxima Pictures. Like another crap, Sumpah Pocong di Sekolah tells a story about 3 high school students who see the recurring image of ghost in their school. As everybody knows, the ghost is coming from the past. Once, she was a student. Because of his unwanted pregnancy, she committed abortion. A teacher, one of the student’s father, was responsible for the crime. I could explain no more, because it’s unnecessary.

As always, Indonesian horror flick tells familiar stories with familiar characters in familiar situations. But what struck me is not the story, but how the director executes that trash. Sumpah Pocong di Sekolah is surely not a gem, but it shows that the director has a talent. It’s well-executed film. The acting department is very impressive and surprisingly, quite convincing. Even the scoring is tooo painful to bear, the director knows how to find such a beautiful location and communicates with his art director. The ghost is not fatal nor menacing, but the scenes where the girl committed abortion remind me of Christian Mungiu's Cannes-award winning film, 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days. It’s terrifying. Fucking terrifying and violent.

Yes, I know Sumpah Pocong di Sekolah is still that low-grade horror flick without any narrative content, but I’m just justifying my full-time job (watching film) that Awi Suryadi badly needs a good script for his next film.

A significant number of studies on thriller film have been made. The growing interest either in the West as well as in the East has made thriller film not only popular in Hollywood, but also in country like Japan and Indonesia. Talking about Japanese thriller, you might easily connect this phenomenon with the growth of pirated DVD market. It’s very easy to find many works of Japanese horror or thriller director. You might recognise Sion Sono whose works spread over the Asia as a cult. Some other directors, like Koji Wakamatsu, Takeshi Mikee and other underground directors have paved new way to the popularization of Japanese thriller.

I don’t know whether I’m too much or not, but I can find a very strong reference to Japanese thriller in the new Indonesian thriller, FIKSI. FIKSI is made by first time director, Mouly Surya whose idea was written by arguably one of the most talented young scriptwriter and director, Joko Anwar. FIKSI tells about a girl (Alisha) who keeps the darkness inside her normal life. Her mother committed suicide after witnessing her father has another lover. Her father could be one of those 10 of Indonesian richest who hires an ex-intel to watch over his daughter.

She is 20 years old. She loves dolls and she is like Japanese dolls. She falls in love with a guy, Bari (Dony) who once cleans her house. Following her intuition, she follows Bari and finally lands in his cheap crampy housing complex (rumah susun). He stays with his girlfriend. He is a writer who has a noble pursuit to find the ending of his story. After her arrival, many strange happens. An incest gay couple were shot. An old woman dies after her cats were killed. An old protester whose house was evicted, jumps out of the 5th floor. Dony’s girlfriend was abducted. What happened?

A thriller film relies on intricacy of plot to create fear and apprehension in the audience. This film exemplifies a quite good plot and twist. The story is convincing, despite some lacks like, why Alisha’s father and his intel watchman do not try to investigate where she is. I like the way the character put in the screen.

But the film shows all the first-time director’s flaws. The acting is campy. Wardrobe department should feel guilty. They look cheap. Some scenes, as I have thought, have very strong reference to the Sion Sono’s flick, Strange Circus. I can’t help it. Even the style looks like a ripped-off of Strange Circus. The mother, the girl, and how they interacts, just look alike. Why, oh, why?

Susy Ivatty of Kompas stated that this film got influence from noir film, the genre Joko Anwar loves most (or I think so). Well, in cinematography/lighting department, I can see it but in half-baked fib. The blocks look menacing, more inhabited by mystery, fear and control. Zeke quite successfully presents a noir atmosphere. But if Susy Ivatty said that the film portrays a femme fatale (which she means, “fatal woman” , or ‘perempuan fatalis’), I would like to suggest her to learn more English or even take a French course a bit. Yes, I know Alisha looks like ‘perempuan fatalis’ but she is dangerous.

As the film has been selected for the prestigious Pusan International Film Festival, I dearly hope that you, readers, could appreciate the effort.

I was in disorder. I heard manic street preachers a lot and i keep them in my company. i think i will forget all those years that've passed. it has been 2 years. i met him during a festival. he was sleepy. my friend thought that i love pale boy, sick or emo kid, sort of that. but i think that's not the point. he said he slept at 3 in the morning. oh, i think, he never sleeps.i frequently find his blog online at 3 in the morning.

i thought i will forget him. it's our first encounter and we never meet again. i see him during the concert, but he does not recognise me. maybe he never will. i never think about that. i dated with another guy. complicated one and already broke up. nothing's special. you dated someone. he dissapointed you and it did not work. pain is inevitable but suffering is optional.

on sunday afternoon, i visited a korean little store. he loves korean cloth, once. i want to buy a fedora hat. a cool fedora hat. and GAP jeans. and oucchhh, that thought passed me by. he should have been there. i got busted.

last nite, we headed nowhere. I mean, me and my friends. Oh, I mean, we were going to PRJ for the concert. But we were late , because we hanged out in Monas for a while. Take photos etc. And the busway were empty, but three of us. we arrived at nine o'clock and the the brandals was over. damn. i could not draw my lose. we only have iwan fals, then. my friends gone, i directly went to the main stage where i found nothing but him everywhere. he was quite surreal. it is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die and you should think about it while there is still time.

hoho, iwan fals was fascinating. it's like old days. i stood in the front of the teenage boys wearing black tshirt and some OI banners. they smell of cheap intoxicated liquid. but they sang a long while the master played his guitar and sang some old-emotion-weighted songs. Some are political. I love cheap entertainment. And I was glad to be there. Just to be there. but i start to think about weed.

oh, well, i laughed too much last nite, without weed and leli thought that i fall in love. i thought so. he was electric. i thought he worked for the national electricity company. well, 'he's electric, he's in a family full of eccentrics' (oasis). i thought he was standing there, in the middle of the teenage pale boys, getting drunk by Toko Sinar's cheap alcohol and drugs. but he was quite surreal. oh, man, i hate visual arts. Is he available --in printable version?

ABOUT DEATH VOMIT
Death Vomit is established in 1995, in Yogyakarta. The first formation of Death Vomit was Dede (Vocal), Wilman (Guitar), Ary (Bass), and Roy (Drum). Since the beginning, Death Vomit was playing their own songs, although when they performed, they also played other band’s songs, which became the guideline of Death Vomit music style. Not so long after that, Death Vomit recorded the rehearsal demo for radios which have metal music, in Mustang Radio and others in Yogyakarta and surrounds. Because of the demo on the radio, Death Vomit received lots of invitation to perform in outside of Yogyakarta, such as Jakarta, Bandung, Purwokerto, Solo, Malang, Surabaya, and Denpasar.

In 1997 Death Vomit joined in the Metalik Klinik compilation album (Rotorcorp/Musica Studio). The impact of this compilation made Death Vomit became more famous and became more often to perform in and out of Yogyakarta.

In November 1999, finally they released their debut album, “Eternally Deprecated” which was organized independently by Death Vomit, from the recording process, production, until the distributions through their own label Demented Mind Records. The album selling was 1,500 copies. Through this success, Extreme Souls Production interested to recopy, where the recopy editions were sold for 2,200 cassettes.

The latest formation of Death Vomit Sofyan Hadi (Guitar/Vocal), Oki Haribowo (Bass), and Roy (Drum), on May 2006, recorded the latest album “The Prophecy” and was released and distributed by Rottrevore Records Jakarta.

Category:Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Joseph Conrad
Akhir-akhir ini agak susah untuk membaca buku. Banyak alasannya. Aku membeli karena covernya bagus (judge a book by its cover!) dan penulisnya Joseph Conrad.

"He is obeyed, yet he inspired neither love nor fear, nor even respect. He inspired uneasiness."

"The horror! The horror!". Dan di akhir novel, Conrad menulis," The offing was barred by a black, bank of clouds, and the tranquil waterway leading to the uttermost ends of the earth flowed sombre under an overcast sky-- seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness."

Sebuah penutup yang sangat powerful.
